ACSAD training course in Jordan to prepare facilitators for the field schools of the red palm weevil
As a part of its efforts to develop date palm cultivation in the Arab countries in cooperation with the food and agriculture organization of the United Nations “FAO” and the Jordanian ministry of agriculture, the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid zones And Dry lands “ACSAD” concluded a training course entitled “preparation of facilitators for field schools for the red palm weevil”. For three days in the directorate of agriculture in the Jordan valley. Which comes as one of the activities included in the project “Farmer Field Schools for Integral Management of Red Palm Weevil Control in Jordan and Iraq.
Naser Aldin Al-Obaid Director General of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid zones and Dry lands (ACSAD), said in a statement that this course aimed to raise the skills and capabilities of the agricultural engineers supervising the field schools of the red palm weevil in order to start implementing these schools in manner with farmers. Where they were trained on the optimal methods for the integrated management of the red palm weevil, which threatens the palm plantations and investments in the main palm-growing areas in the Jordan valley, the Southern Shouneh, the northern Jordan Valley and Aqaba where 5 field schools are being implemented for farmers in those areas.
He stressed that the course focused on introducing technicians to the concept of field schools and the mechanisms for their implementation which depend on the method of learning by doing and transferring information by the farmer to the farmer through practical applications in the farmers’ fields. He said that this approach to learning is one of the best guiding approaches used in our Arab region.
A group of specialists in the field of agricultural extension and integrated pest management from Jordan, with the participation of the FAO advisor in Amman, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Jubouri, presented a series of theoretical lectures and various field application.
