ACSAD concludes Saffron workshop
The Director-General of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Drylands (ACSAD) Dr. Nasr Edin Obaid concluded the activities of the training course on “Saffron cultivation and production,” which was held by ACSAD in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in the Syrian Arab Republic, for the benefit of 20 agricultural engineers from the staff of the Syrian General Commission for Agricultural Scientific Research where Its activities continued on 9 and 10/12/2020.
In a speech at the closing of the session, Dr. Obaid stressed that ACSAD is working to spread Saffron’s cultivation in poor agricultural areas as small rural family projects to increase their income and employ the largest possible number of manpower, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and all concerned parties. He noted that a large number of trainees were of those who hold Master’s degree and preparing for a Ph.D., some of whom obtained it, which indicates the importance of the course and the high science level it has, which is what ACSAD keen on it in all its activities.
He pointed out that the success of Saffron cultivation in a region doesn’t mean adopted it instead of the strategic crops. He also stressed the necessity to cultivate it in the small areas not to cause great losses to farmers if a rainy season comes.
Dr. Obaid asked the experts, researchers, and all participants many questions, such as which uses we seek from Saffron? Medical? Nutritional. Or · ·?; wishing from the concerned experts to compose a book or a brochure on Saffron’s agricultural transactions, including what all related to it, starting from soil preparation to the harvest.
Many participated experts spoke about cultivating Saffron in most of the Syrian environments, pointing out the possibility of achieving a map to cultivate it, stressing the necessity to cultivate it organically to double its material value and facilitate the organic agriculture products export.
The trainees expressed their profound thanks and appreciation to ACSAD and Dr. Nasr Edin Obaid for their keen interest in the workshop’s success and their tremendous interest in holding other advanced workshops in the near future.
In closing, the certificates were distributed to the trainees by the Director-General and some concerned experts; the Director-General of the Arab Center (ACSAD) Dr. Nasr Edin Obaid chaired the activities of the practical Day of the workshop with a field tour on the experiments of the Saffron cultivation and production in General Commission Scientific Agriculture center at Sergaya-Rif Dimashq.
