The Arab Center ACSAD/ workshop on the improving Wheat production in Mauritania.
The Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Drylands ACSAD is holding a workshop with various agriculture and scientific research and extension activities in Mauritania through videoconference technology for two days under the patronage of His Excellency Mr. Weld Al-Zain, the Minister of Rural Development, which focuses on mechanisms for improving cereal crops’ production using scientific means, particularly raising wheat production.
Dr. Nasr Edin Obid confirmed today that the holding of this important workshop is the result of continuous and effective cooperation between ACSAD and the Ministry of Rural Development of Mauritania in the field of improving wheat production and in keeping with the guidelines and objectives of ACSAD in developing agricultural production in the Arab Countries and raising food security levels there.
He noted that Acsad experts had presented and discussed 11 scientific papers on various methods of modern wheat breeding and soil, the development of irrigation methods, water harvesting and agricultural extension, and the multiplication of the seed of modern varieties developed in Acsad, with the participation of more than 25 Arab and international experts interested in the topics of wheat production in dry environments.
For his part, Mr. Mohammed bin Obeid Al-Mazrooei, the Chairman of the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID), said that the Authority was an Arab financial institution contributing to strengthening Arab food security in several agricultural projects, following the approach of sustainable agricultural development, which has given it a great interest in supporting and disseminating advanced technologies in the areas in which it operates to raise The level of agricultural production, including concern for improved varieties of wheat and barley that are tolerant to stress and have higher productivity
He clarified that strategic partnerships could be established and supporting the cooperation areas with the Arab Center ACSAD through adopting the multiplication processes and disseminating those varieties that are distinguished in the Arab world, particularly in Mauritania, because of their positive reversals in reducing the cereal crop food gap in the Arab Countries, which would achieve agricultural development that would rise to the aspirations of the Arab people in all countries.
It worth to be mentioned that the Ministry of Rural Development of Mauritania has recently approved 40 varieties of wheat and barley with high productivity and approved in the Arab Countries, which have been developed in ACSAD, and 77 varieties characterized with high productivity and tolerant to water stresses and drought.
It is estimated that this scientific cooperation in the field of agriculture will reduce the quantities of imported wheat in Mauritania.
