“The ACSAD role in the synergy between the Rio environmental agreements” A workshop with international participation
The Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dryland ACSAD held a workshop on “the ACSAD role in the synergy between the Rio environmental agreements”; the importance of these agreements and ACSAD role in applying their activities, and synergy among them in the Arab region particularly, in combating desertification, preserving biodiversity, limiting the adverse impacts of climate change as well as applying sustainable development goals 2020-2030 considering the Arab Center ACSAD is assigned by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States to follow up the implementation of the two agreements of Combating Desertification and Biodiversity in the Arab countries.
The ministries of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Water Resources, Local Administration and Environment, in addition to the General Organization of Remote Sensing, Badia Development and Improvement Authority, Atomic Energy Commission, the General Commission of Water Resources, the professional agricultural and veterinary Syndicates and Unions, the Damascus University Presidency and the Agriculture Faculty from the headquarters country, and some of the international organizations working in Syria participated in this workshop.
His Excellency, Dr. Nasr Edin Obaid, the Director-General of ACSAD, confirmed in a speech in the opening on the importance of holding this workshop to publicize the Rio Agreement and its importance as an international reference to limit desertification and land degradation, biodiversity loss, mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change on human and environment. He also highlighted the role of ACSAD in synergy among them at national and regional levels.
Dr. Obaid also indicated the prominent role of ACSAD in supplying the international efforts targeted to the synergy among the three agreements; contribution to implementing several from their activities in preserving the animal and plant biodiversity as well as the genetic improvement; and ACSAD contribution to monitoring desertification, preparation the national programs to identify land degradation, and the implementation the fifteenth goal of sustainable development goals.
His Excellency also clarified ACSAD role in spreading the conservation agriculture system in the Arab countries, preparing the executive plan of Arab Water Security alongside the implementation for many water projects and projects related to climate change.
Dr. Obaid showed the level of synergy among the three environmental agreements through ACSAD seeking integration in its projects; with what would achieve its goals in applying to monitor and combat desertification technologies, assist the Arab countries in restoring degraded land, increasing the green spot for them, and improving the efficiency of the national institutions’ capacities in the field of natural resources management.
At the end of his speech, the Director-General of Acsad Organization praised participants’ efforts in this informative workshop, hoping that it would add them new horizons of knowledge and science, pledging to put ACSAD potentials in the service of joint national Arab international work.
A number of ACSAD experts presented the workshop’s representations related to the synergy between the agreements and ACSAD achievements in combating desertification and climate change; and its contribution in implementing it in the Arab region, as well as the implementation of the biodiversity agreement and the role of Carbon in climate change and land degradation.
