Summary

The study was conducted in the industrial city of ‘Adra’ and its geographical area which is located in Damascus countryside/Syria (2016) .Some heavy metals cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were accumulated in the soil- to determine the degree of pollution in this newly constructed industrial area; where no pre-construction and post-construction environmental review were done.

Soil samples were collected from 12 sites; 6 sites within the industrial city and 6 sites from the surrounding areas. The results showed the high concentrations of metals within the industrial city and the cement company of ‘Adra’ whereas this metals were decreased in the surrounding areas indicating a clear cumulative effect of elements. ,as the environmental maps showed the areas that have significant concentrations of heavy metal and areas that have less concentrations.

The results showed an accumulation of heavy metals in the soil of the study area, this accumulation is within the allowable limits (0.01 – 2 mg/kg) of Cadmium and (2 – 200 mg/kg) of Lead except in the fourth industrial area which exceeded the allowable limit of Lead (214.73 mg/kg) and ‘Adra’ cement company is approached of exceeding the allowable limit of Cadmium (1.55 mg/kg).

The results also showed lead accumulation in the depth (A) of soil, and cadmium movement and its accumulation in depth (B) of soil.
