ACSAD’s Director-General / A Lecture on ACSAD’s achievements in the field of Dates Palm.

Dr. Nasr Edin Obaid, The director-general of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dryland ACSAD, presented a comprehensive presentation in his lecture entitled “ The Role of the Arab Center in the Dates Palm Cultivation Development in the Arab Countries”; on the ACSAD’s achievements in the field of palm within the scientific, technical presentation organized by Khalifa International Award for Date Palm in the International 7th Date Palm Conference.

The Director-General of ACSAD stressed in his lecture, via videoconference, the importance of Date Palm historically, religiously, nutritionally, healthily, environmentally, and Socio-economically. He also pointed out the developmental projects implemented by ACSAD to develop and grow Date Palm cultivation in the Arab Countries. In addition to the outputs of these projects in several Arab countries, which had yielded many significant socio-economic results, reflected positively on the Date production in the Arab region and contributed to production increasing by about 30-50%. And the futuristic visions seeking for by ACSAD through the new projects that it is going to implement according to its action plan constructed on its clear strategy in the field of palm sector.

He also presented a brief about the scientific research accomplished by ACSAD in that field, setting out the diverse activities of the Arab Center during the Corona Pandemic. In addition to close cooperation between the Palm Scientific Program implementing by ACSAD and the biodiversity convention and sustainable development goals SDGs 2020-2030.

Dr. Obaid announced that ACSAD reached a protocol to palm pollination by tissue culture technology for each species of (LoLo date) and ( Majhoul date); commencing of the actual production to vast numbers of them that are free from dangerous diseases such as  Bayoud disease (Fusarium oxysporum), and insect pests like Red Palm Weevil. In addition to its outstanding efforts in transferring modern technologies to the technical Arab cadres.

 Dr. Abdulwahab Zayed, The General Secretary of the Award, praised the Arab Center’s achievements and the efforts exserting in the field of Palm Date sector development in the Arab region.

Dozens of experts and specialized technicians in the palm and agriculture sector in the Arab region and from international and Arab Organizations have participated in this webinar.

It is worth mentioning that the conference aims to provide an opportunity to update scientific knowledge on various aspects of pollination, production, and Date Palm protection and marketing, in addition to presenting and comparing the modern expertise of the United Arab of Emirates with those of date production countries and supporting the international technical cooperation in various areas of the date production chain.
