New varieties of wheat and barley From ACSAD in Algeria

Dr. Nasr Eddin Al Obaid, the Director-General of Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Drylands, confirmed that the Durum wheat variety (ACSAD 1431) and the barley variety (ACSAD 1704) were officially approved, In Algeria, within the framework of scientific cooperation between the Arab Center “ACSAD” and the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the field of developing new high-yielding varieties of wheat and barley, which contribute to enhancing grain yield production in Algeria.

Dr. Al Obaid clarified in a speech today that the Durum wheat (ACSAD 1431) was called Zamalet Al-Ameer Abdul Qader, and the barley (ACSAD 1704) as Tehert. The two genotypes were reached after a long series of field experiments in Algerian agricultural research stations and farmers’ fields, carried out by ACSAD`s experts and researchers specialized in the field of grain breeding and the development of new varieties suitable for arid zones environments in coordination and cooperation with Algerian researchers.

It’s worth noting, that the new wheat variety has an average yield of 3.8 tons/ha, good quality of grains, tolerance to diseases, especially yellow rust and brown rust, and It is distinguished of its early maturity so it is expected to be grown in the State of Tiaret.

The new high- yield barley variety exceeds an average of 3.7 tons/ha. It is distinguished to its tolerance to Net Blotch disease, cold, and drought. Where It can be cultivated in the highlands regions of Algeria.

ACSAD continues providing the Arab countries annually with its best-developed varieties of grains to study, test, and approved their best, thereby supporting Arab capabilities in grain production
