Deir Al-Hajar Center for Camel Research and Development- Syria

Site:

It is located in the fourth settlement zone, about 30 km away from the east of Damascus city. Its rainfall is estimated at 100-125 mm annually. This center was established in the year 1995, and is considered the only research center for camel researches in Syria. Its total area is around (167 ha) divided into 40 fields of /4/ ha each. The center includes a barn with a capacity of 100 heads; the barn is supplied with a fenced yard (40×40 m each side) and a two-floor fodder warehouse with a gross floor area of 160 m2 .

Objective:

Develop camel breeding at the productive, reproductive, feeding and health care levels.

Activities:

  •  Identify Shami camel properties and productive capacity.
  •  Develop specialized production lines for camel milk and meat production.
  • Get acquainted with the physiology of camel reproduction and adaptation.
  • Study the role of improved nutrition and care in fertility raising.
  • Develop the hidden capacities of camels.
  • Survey rangelands and identify camel’s favorite plants and the nutritious values of these plants.
  • Identify camel carrying capacity in rangelands.
